Apple TV has slowly but surely lost market share in the content TV stakes. With the likes of Chromecast, Fire TV, and Roku all taking huge chunks out of the Apple TV market. In the last few years, set-top boxes have no longer been the requirement as content streaming services such as Netflix or Stan have now provided a native application built into the software of new TV’s being sold.
However, if you’re still a fan of Apple TV then Samsung has announced that they will start supporting Apple iTunes in their latest models. This will allow customers to watch their purchased Movies and TV through an Apple iTunes. Samsung has also announced that TV models purchased in 2018 will be firmware upgradable too. So having the software built-into the TV allows the customer to free up one of their precious HDMI ports.
In addition to the iTunes support, you’ll find that AirPlay2 will be built in too. This allows any Apple device, such as iPhone, iPad, or Mac, to beam their photos and content onto a Samsung AirPlay2 enabled device.
Netflix and their massive investment in their new streaming service, costing in excess of $1 billion, has got Apple very worried. Netflix has strategically positioned itself with every major TV manufacturer and provided Netflix on these TVs effectively capturing the market in a very short space of time. It’s this market dominance that has Apple very worried – signaling the demise of the Apple TV.
There is no official word on whether Apple has approached other TV manufacturers but there are rumours that LG will announce AirPlay2 support at CES this week.
