How to keep your Computer running smoothly

6 Steps to Cleanliness

Desktop, Laptop, Mac, iPad, Android tablet, in fact anything that access the internet, even your fridge fi you have one of those, these all need servicing every now and then or they clog up with meaningless bits of information and slow everything down or even allow virus, spyware or malware onto your system.

Step 1 Cleaning
Empty your waste basket, you would be amazed at how many people delete things but do not do this simple step. The file or files may seem removed from wherever but they are still on your computer until the waste basket is emptied

Step 2
Go into your internet settings and delete your history and cookies. Be mindful to keep any website you want to go back to into your favourites first as anything you have not saved will be deleted, but it is always a good idea to delete your cookies frequently as they could harbour a virus or spyware.
Also be sure to un-tick the saved passwords and forms if you use these regularly as they will delete as well.

Step 3
Open your e-mail account and clean it up, so many of us use the inbox and other folders as a filing cabinet. The more e-mails you keep the slower it will become, and because email takes up a finite space as it closes on the ceiling of that space it makes it easier for your e-mail file to become corrupted and if you have not backed it up you could lose it and your contacts for good.
Especially important, don’t forget to empty you deleted folder if you have not already set that to automatic as this will help speed things up as well.

Step 4
Disc Clean-up, this utility deletes all those logging files that are created when you install something, your internet temporary files and lots more

Defragmenter, an interesting utility but be careful this one could take a long time and I mean 8 hours or more if you have never defragmented your hard drive since you got your computer (most of us don’t). Fragmentation occurs the first time you delete a file or photo and continues until we defragment the disk. When you delete something it leaves a empty space ready for you to fill with the next file you create or download, if the file is bigger than the space it will put some of it in the space and the rest in another space it can fine therefore making it slower for the computer to find all of the file next time you want to open it, doing this all the time fragments the disk and can end up slowing your computer dramatically over time, running the defrag utility therefore gives you more space to play with and a faster pc to use. Always remember to defrag after you have deleted you wastebasket, old files, and used the clean disk utility to make the best of this program has to offer.

Step 5
Keep your anti-virus up to date and don’t let it expire, this will help keep your computer clean or viruses, malware and spyware.

Step 6
Keep your operating system up to date, at least once a month but sometimes more you will be given updates to install. Whether it be Windows, Mac IOS, Android or whatever this will also help keep the viruses away.

With a few simple tools you can make your computer run more smoothly and help reduce breakdowns as well.
