Mobile searches are increasingly becoming more popular than desktop searches--a trend which is likely to continue in the future. That's why Google wants to help us, users, find more mobile optimized websites in search results. All of it, to guarantee us a better and more efficient searching experience.
With the introduction of the new algorithm, which will have its launch on April 21st, pages that are mobile-friendly will rank higher in search results performed on mobile devices such as mobile phones or tablets.
However, it's not the first time Google addresses issues with mobile searches.
In its efforts to increase the mobile search experience, Google has been labeling mobile-friendly websites visible in the search results for a few months already.
Over the years, Google has also managed to tackle with, for example, faulty linking. Faulty linking occurs when links from search results redirect users to a home page of a mobile version of a particular page instead of the desired page which was visible in the search results. From the moment Google implemented an algorithm addressing this issue, pages having faulty redirects ranked significantly lower in search results. A solution which has greatly helped to sieve out irrelevant and misleading links from those users could actually benefit from.
New Tools for Webmasters
Along with introduction of their newest algorithm, Google provides two tools for webmasters. These new tools allow webmasters to check whether their website is mobile-friendly, and perform a Mobile Usability Report that lists variety of problems connected with viewing webpages on mobile devices.
In its announcement, Google also mentions importance of App Indexing for mobile applications, particularly for the developers who'd like their apps to rank better in search results.
App Indexing makes mobile apps visible in search results as if they were websites. This technology, also called deep-linking, lets search engine direct users to a relevant page in the application which has already been installed on their device. What is important for developers and webmasters is that indexed apps rank higher in search results, therefore, it is essential for them to 'establish the relationship between their web pages and app deep links'.
Ensuring that your website is mobile-friendly
All of the above boils down to one important conclusion: every respectable business owner needs to take into account the visibility of his or her company on a mobile device. That said, it's not just a matter of having a responsive website anymore, a factor, however, which still is the most important, but now it's more about your brand's visibility and your company's website PageRank keeping mobile devices on mind.
